I read the book, One Day, by David Nicholls and adored it. I could hardly wait to see the movie even though the idea of Anne Hathaway as Emma was off-putting. Surely Emma was pudgier and both plainer and and at the same time prettier? Making up for that was delicious Jim Sturgess as Dexter. He was Adorable in Across the Universe - definitely could see him as the dude Emma couldn't resist. So I was psyched for this film. And yet I didn't go. And apparently neither did the majority of the books fans! The film reportedly cost about $15 million to make but according to Box Office Mojo only took in $13 mill here in the U.S., plus an additional $25 million abroad. See details here. And now it's gone, at least here in the states. It was pulled after a short five week run because if a film isn't pulling in the audience, the average multiplex just can't afford to keep it around. I wish I'd seen it on the big screen but now I'm doomed to watch it on dvd. Aargh! Did you read this book AND/OR see this movie? What did you think? What did I miss?
Synopsis: Emma and Dexter meet for the first time on the night of their graduation. Tomorrow they must go their separate ways. So where will they be on this one day next year? And the year after that? And every year that follows? Twenty years, two people, ONE DAY. From the author of the massive bestseller STARTER FOR TEN.
