Aren't you amazed by the huge chunk of his life that Peter Jackson has devoted to bringing JRR Tolkein's The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit to the screen? It's been well over a decade since the first film, The Fellowship of the Rings, debuted in 2001, with the final installment The Hobbit: There and Back Again coming out next December 2014. What heaven to wrap yourself up like that, totally immersing yourself in the work. If you love it, that has to be the very definition of 'fan'. And if you too are a Tolkein fan, and want to immerse yourself in that world, what a glorious opportunity. But I don't know; it's a lot of time focused on one world; at what point does it become same old, same old? I'm just not all that worked up about it. Possibly a feeling shared by some of the cast and crew; Jackson had Tolkein as his muse but it may well be that the behind the scenes guys and gals - while thrilled for the work - are a bit burnt out on the world of wee men, elves, fairies, dragons, wizards and the lot. Kind of like I am BUT I'm open.
Jackson's slavish devotion to Tolkein brings us the newest trailer for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. The footage features a quick peek at Benedict Cumberbatch's dragon but it's the sound of his gravelly but silky throated voice that grabs me.
The film is due out December 13th. Take a gander at the latest trailer.
