Trailer #3 for The Secret Life of Walter Mitty
The film, written by Steve Conrad (The Pursuit of Happyness) and based on the James Thurber short story hits theaters on Christmas Day. From what I've seen in all three trailers, this daydream believer can't wait. At one time or another all of us want to be something other, bigger, grander; why can't we burst through our own self-imposed limitations and Live with a capital L? Take a chance; make it happen? Because those are just letters on a page, empty words; life takes action and that's hard. Naturally, we're terrified. What if we mess up? Everyone will know how ridiculous and presumptuous we are- did we really have the arrogance to think that we could do it?! US?! C'mon! Get real. Uck. The humiliation. Better not to try at all. Not to even think about it.
It's that hurt, mortified part of us that roots for guys like Mitty; quiet unassuming types who have bosses that treat them crap and who women find invisible. Ben Stiller knows how to play that underdog, the guy who almost doesn't get the girl; it looks as though he elevates the role here opposite Kristin Wiig with Adam Scott as the boss whose butt you'd love to kick.
Although with it's "Stop Dreaming. Start Living." message, it does seem to be aiming for higher ground.
It doesn't really matter if he gets the girl - although I expect he does - it's the journey he'll take and the person he'll meet along the way (himself) that counts. And I don't think the point is to stop dreaming. I think the point is to start living your dreams.
