I wasn't wild about JK Rowling's A Casual Vacancy especially its' grizzly, depressing ending but this trailer for the three-part series coming to HBO beginning April 29th looks fantastic! Dark, gritty and crazy-good. Here's hoping it's not just a really well-edited trailer!
I hear the BBC didn't much like JK's ending either so they had screenwriter Sarah Phelps rework it. Phelps wrote the acclaimed Brit TV show East Enders and is currently at work on a new take on Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None. It's a rare occasion when I'm in favor of a screenwriter tinkering with an author's vision especially when it comes to endings, but this is one of them. Did you read Rowling's book? Here's what I thought. The link also takes you to the cast of characters.
I don't know how much screen time he'll have but I'm most excited to see Rory Kinnear as the dearly departed Barry Fairbrother. While he didn't have much to do in The Imitation Game—he was the copper out to get Alan Turing— Kinnear really knocked my socks off in Broken. You probably know him as Tanner in the Bond movies and if you haven't seen Rory Kinnear in his Black Mirror episode where he plays the prime minister .... well, you need to see him in Black Mirror.
