The first trailer for Secret in their Eyes just devastated me. Now that the movie’s release is just two weeks out, the studio has released trailer #2. Let’s watch, shall we? Both trailers focus on Julia Roberts, her desire for revenge and her grief. This second one really leaves Nicole Kidman and Chiwetel Ejiofor to the side so I’m interested to see how the final film plays out. Clearly she does some strong emotional work here as an FBI agent searching for her daughter’s killer. I really appreciate the fact that writer/director Billy Ray (Captain Phillips) did a gender switch when he scripted his adaptation with Roberts in mind. IMDB doesn’t credit the novel that the first film was based on, El Secreto de sus Ojos directed by Juan Jose Campanella. If you want to go the original source you’ll want to go back to Eduardo Sacheri’s, La Pregunta de sus Ojos, literally The Question in their Eyes, but translated as The Secret in their Eyes. The English translation by John Cullen is available everywhere.
The book is 384 pages so technically I still have time to read it before seeing the film although Ray has clearly made some changes that make pre-reading less relevant. On the other hand, there’s still the possibility of reading just for the pleasure of reading, true? Have you read Sacheri’s book? Thoughts?
