Hearing Saoirse Ronan, Brooklyn screenwriter (and amazing author) Nick Hornby and director John Crowley talking about Eilis Lacey and a young woman on the verge of adulthood literally made me cry.
I can’t ask for more than that from a Sunday Slacker video.
Saoirse Ronan is a Best Actress nominee, Nick Hornby is up for writing the adaptation of Colm Toibin’s book, while the film itself is one of the Best Picture nominees. I read an interview with Robert Redford who was asked about this year’s #OscarsSoWhite debate. He said he didn’t pay much attention to the Oscars period. For him, it’s about the work, about the art. In addition to increasing the voices of women and minority voices, I do think we need to get back to the art. Saoirse Ronan, Hornby and Crowley really put the art in the work. Awards or no, they should be congratulated for making a lovely movie, well worth its running time and more with its familiar coming of age theme.
